In 1969, at twenty-three, Suzan was committed to the notorious “Snake Pit” at Patton State Mental Hospital, in San Bernardino, CA. It was there that the deeper crack in the family bell finally rang. This memoir traces how each family member confronted – or avoided – the stigma of mental health and why the truth was buried in silence for decades.
